Annual Conventions

The Society has held annual conventions since the first event in New York City, September of 1969. Three conventions have been held in New York City as well as all other major cities in the United States such as: Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and many other cities.

The international venues have included three conventions in Beijing, three in Canada, one in Dublin, five in Hong Kong, four in London, one in Paris, one in Singapore, one in Taipei, and one in Xian.

11:00 am EDT - lecture by Stephen Little, Ph.D., Florence and Harry Sloan Curator of Chinese Art, Head, Chinese, Korean, and South & Southeast Asian Departments

“The Written Word as Magic: The Art of Chinese Calligraphy”
The lecture will be on the art of Chinese calligraphy, focusing on its major forms, styles, and uses, including divination and ritual. Dr. Little will also relate this to the various styles of calligraphy that appear on snuff bottles. The talk will contain numerous anecdotes to explore the human story underlying the deve

lopment of Chinese calligraphy over the past three millennia.

11:00 am EDT - lecture by Clare Chu, active dealer in the field of snuff bottles for more than 35 years, a consultant at auction, lecturer, author of numerous articles, catalogues and books on snuff bottles as well as board secretary of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society.
“A Gathering of Miniature Antiques: Non-Imperial Chinese Snuff Bottles from
Taiwanese Collections”
The lecture will focus on the snuff bottle collections to be exhibited at the forthcoming 2021 Taipei convention.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2020
11:00 am EDT - lecture by Andrew Singer, an author, speaker, traveler, history lover, and collector of books and Chinese snuff bottles who lives on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. More on his writing and adventures can be found at: andrewsingerchina.com
"Sailing to Cathay: Maritime Trade Routes to Asia Before and After the Arrival of the Europeans at the Turn of the Sixteenth Century"
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to sail around the Cape of Good Hope and set up bases in Asia. A portion of the lecture will relate to snuff bottles.
